2012 Branch Photo Competition

This year it had been arranged for Nick Challoner moderator of the STN Mailing List & accomplished photographer to be lead judge assisted by 3 members who’d not entered this year.

Despite the groups projector failing at the start of the evening we persevered by using the laptop screen for the judging, not ideal but functional at least.

The overall standard was very good with an excellent mix of vintage, modern – military & civil aircraft depicted in the 43 entries by 8 members.

The winning shot (above) was submitted by David Whitworth showing the OV-10 Bronco at Duxford. Fortuitously for David the pilot had seen his camera & obligingly activated the smoke-system as he taxied in. Possibly one of the last photos of this aircraft as it sadly crashed at Kemble shortly after, fortunately the pilot survived his injuries thanks to the quick actions of the airfield fire-crew.

Second place went to Kevin Jarvis’s interesting shot at Birmingham of a Lufthansa EMB-190 landing with a Flybe EMB-170 in the background an interesting juxtaposition of scale.

Mike Kemp’s air-to-air shot of one of Classic Flight’s Dragon Rapides came 3rd, taken from another Rapide (G-AGTM) during an MKAS organised group sortie. A nicely lit shot of a classic airliner.

Thanks again go to Nick Challoner & the members who assisted with judging and for Nick’s Presentation on Aviation Photography which can be read here
